Every couple knows this conversation: “What should we do on Saturday?” — “I don't know, you pick.” — “No, you pick.” A wheel ends the standoff and turns the indecision into a game. As a gift, it has one rare advantage: it doesn't end when your partner opens it. Every spin becomes a promise for the months ahead.
What a date night wheel is and how to use it
It's a wheel split into slices, each with one option. It can be made of paper, live in a random-picker app or be part of a digital gift. What turns it into a gift, and not just a pastime, are the rules you agree on:
- You spin it, you do it — whatever comes up counts as a commitment.
- A deadline — for example, by your next monthiversary.
- One veto a month — for when “hiking” lands on a rainy week.
- Screenshot the result — it becomes proof (and a running joke) when someone tries to wriggle out.

How to build a balanced wheel
- 6 to 10 options. Fewer and the result gets predictable; more and the slices get too thin to read on a phone.
- Mix the types. A recipe that works: half dates, a third love coupons and the rest silly dares.
- Everything should be doable within a month. “Trip to Europe” only if it's already booked.
- Keep it short. Two or three words per slice: “Sunset at a lookout” works; a whole sentence won't fit.
- Put a question on top. “What's our next date?” or “What did you win from me?” gives the spin a purpose.
- Add a wild card. “You choose” saves the day when nothing fits.
The surprise wheel in the Couple Retrospective
In the Retrospective, the wheel is an optional chapter with a carnival feel: a wheel with a red rim and light bulbs flashing in sequence, a flapper that clicks against the dividers as it spins and the prize popping out as a stamped ticket. Your partner can spin again. You write the question that shows up above the wheel and the options — two or more.

The date wheel
Your person spins it and finds out your next date.
It shows up among the other screens — minutes together, photos, music, the letter — which gives the spin the weight of a promise. It pairs well with the secret word from the couple word game: one announces, the other picks. The rest of the screens are in our couple retrospective guide.
The Date Wheel in the Couple Album
In the Album, the wheel becomes a page in the book. Your partner spins it and it “prints” a ticket for your next date; next to it, a black-paper photo album waits for a picture from each date, for you to add once you've lived it. When you create it, you choose the date ideas that go on the wheel, writing your own or starting from suggestions.

The wheel and the dates album
They spin the wheel and it prints a ticket for your next date; next to it, a black-paper album waiting for a photo from each one.
The Album stays online forever on both plans, which suits a wheel you work through over the months. It starts at $9.90 and the Retrospective at $4.90, always with a one-time payment. See the whole book on the Couple Album page.
How to make a paper date night wheel
If you want something to spin on the coffee table, you can make it in an afternoon:
- Cut a circle out of cardboard (a paper plate works) and divide it into 8 slices with a ruler.
- Write one option in each slice and color them in alternating shades.
- Make a pointer out of an arrow cut from card stock.
- Attach the pointer to the center with a brass paper fastener, not too tight.
- Glue everything onto a bigger piece of cardboard and write the question at the top.
An even simpler version: a date night jar, with folded slips of paper and one draw a week.
