Personalized Wordle-style word game for couples inside a digital gift

The fun of a gift with a game inside is that your partner gets to play. They don't just read that you remember the nickname: they uncover it, letter by letter, and it clicks on the last guess. When the word is the right one, the win becomes the message. And it works at any stage — according to LovePanda internal data (Sept 2026), about 4 in 10 couples who create a gift have been together for less than 4 months, and inside jokes usually exist from the very first week.

How the couple Wordle works

The rules are the same as in Wordle, the daily word game that turned into a habit for millions of people:

  • The board already shows how many letters the word has.
  • Your partner types a guess of the same length and hits enter.
  • The tiles change color: one color for a letter in the right spot, another for a letter that's in the word but in a different position; letters that aren't in the word fade out.
  • They get 6 tries. Guess it, and your message appears.
  • Missed every time? They can try again or reveal the answer — nobody misses the message.

Unlike the public Wordle, a guess doesn't have to be a real word: any combination of letters of the right length counts. And the secret word can be anything that means something to you two — including a nickname that doesn't exist anywhere else.

How to choose the secret word

  1. Length: 5 or 6 letters is the sweet spot. The word can have 3 to 10 letters, but very short ones get guessed by luck and very long ones get tiring on a phone.
  2. Guessable with the question. The question above the game is your hint. “What do I call you when no one's listening?” makes “PUMPKIN” possible; with no hint, it's a lottery.
  3. Meaningful. Getting it right should bring a smile of recognition, not an “oh, okay.”
  4. Not too obvious. Their name gets guessed in two tries. A nickname, a place or a food that's yours pays off more.
  5. No spaces, numbers or symbols. The game's keyboard only has the letters A to Z: two words become one (“MY LOVE” turns into “MYLOVE”), and accented letters lose the accent (“CAFÉ” becomes “CAFE”).

Question and win message: 10 ready-made combinations

The game has three texts: the question, which appears at the top and works as a hint; the word; and the message that shows up when your partner gets it right. Combinations to adapt:

WordQuestion (the hint)Win message
PUMPKINWhat do I call you when no one's listening? And I'll keep calling you that for the rest of my life.
DIVEBARWhere did it all begin?Sticky table, warm beer and the best night of the year.
SATURDAYWhat day of the week did we meet?Since then, Saturday has never been just another day.
POPCORNWhat can never be missing from our movie night? And you always steal the last handful from the bottom.
BUSSTATIONWhere have I waited for you the most?Every goodbye was worth the hello that came after.
MISSYOUWhat do I feel every time the call ends?Only a few more days until that ends too.
GETAWAYWhat's coming up in the next few weeks?Pack a bag: on Friday, we're heading to the mountains.
OFFICIALWhat have I been wanting to ask you for weeks?Want to make it official?
MARRYWhat's my next plan with you? Will you marry me?
ALWAYSUntil when?Always — and then some.

How to use the game as a surprise: the big question, a trip, a message

The game works like an envelope: the word is what's inside. Three uses that go beyond nicknames:

  • Asking them to make it official — the word “OFFICIAL”, the question “What have I been meaning to ask you?” and the message “Want to make it official?”. The ask happens the moment they guess it. More ideas in our guide to a creative relationship proposal.
  • Revealing a plan — “DINNER”, “CONCERT” or the name of a destination announces what comes next. It pairs well with the surprise wheel for couples, which picks your next dates.
  • A long-distance message — “MISSYOU”, with the reunion date in the final message. See more long-distance gift ideas.

Test it on someone else first: if they get it in two guesses, the hint gives too much away; if they don't come close in six, it's too vague. Ideally, the right answer lands somewhere between the 3rd and 5th try.

How to set up the secret word in the Retrospective

In the Couple Retrospective, the game is an optional chapter with a paper look: the letters appear on tiles, the keyboard sits at the bottom and the result comes out on a stamped card. To set it up:

  1. When you create the Retrospective, choose the secret word from the extra chapters.
  2. Write the question that appears above the game.
  3. Type the word, 3 to 10 letters — accents are removed automatically.
  4. Write the message that appears when your partner gets it right.
  5. Check the preview and finish the gift.

The game comes up in the middle of the retrospective, between screens of photos, numbers and music: a pause where your partner stops watching and starts playing. The Retrospective starts at $4.90, as a one-time payment, and the other screens are in our couple retrospective guide.

Other ways to play a word game as a couple

  • Wordle together every day — play the daily Wordle side by side and compare who got it in fewer tries. It turns into a ritual.
  • A printed word search — with your words hidden in the grid, to tuck inside a card.
  • A relationship crossword — the answers are dates, places and nicknames.
  • Hangman on a napkin — at the bar, while you wait for your order.
  • An anagram note — scramble the letters of a sentence and let your partner decode it.
