Relationship Timeline: How to Make One and What to Include

Your story already exists — it's just scattered: some photos in your camera roll, others on Instagram, dates lost somewhere in your chat history. A timeline puts it all in order and makes sense of the path you've taken. It's a gift nobody else can make, because only the two of you know your first date almost didn't happen because of the rain.

What is a relationship timeline?

It's your story as a couple told in chronological order, moment by moment. Each point on the line has at least a date and what happened; the best ones also have a photo and a line only the two of you get. It can be a photo wall with string, a notebook, a slideshow or a digital gift — the format changes, but the logic stays the same: choose the moments well and tell each one with a detail.

What to put on your timeline: 30 moment ideas

You don't need all of them. Pick the ones that have a photo and a story behind them, and leave room for at least one small moment — the kind nobody else would think twice about.

The beginning

1. The day you first saw each other.
2. Your first conversation (a screenshot of that awkward “hey”).
3. Your first date, just the two of you.
4. Your first kiss.
5. Your first photo together.
6. Your first nickname.
7. The day you made it official.
8. The day you told your friends.

The first times

1. The first “I love you.”
2. Your first trip, even if it was just to the next town over.
3. Your first concert or festival together.
4. The day you met the family.
5. Your first Sunday dinner at their parents' place.
6. Your first Christmas or New Year's Eve together.
7. Your first fight that got resolved (if you laugh about it now).
8. The first birthday one of you celebrated as a couple.

Life together

1. Moving in together.
2. Bringing home a pet.
3. A win you celebrated together: getting into college, the new job, graduation.
4. A hard time you got through side by side.
5. Your longest trip.
6. The engagement.
7. The wedding.
8. A tradition you created, like Friday pizza night or the bar you go to every birthday.

The small moments that turned big

1. The umbrella that broke in the middle of a downpour.
2. The dinner that went wrong and became a running joke.

6. The most recent moment, so the story reaches today.

How to write the captions (with examples)

The caption is what turns any photo into one of your moments. A simple formula: what happened + a detail only the two of you know. Compare:

How to build your timeline, step by step

1. Scroll your camera roll backward — start with your oldest photo together and favorite the best ones.
2. Use your chats to find dates — searching WhatsApp or iMessage for words like “on my way,” “tickets” or the name of the place takes you straight to the day.
3. Check the photo info — your phone saves when (and often where) each photo was taken.
4. Pick 3 to 8 moments — mix big milestones with at least one small moment.
5. Write a caption for each one — what happened + one detail.
6. Put them in order and read them out loud — if a moment doesn't make you smile, swap it.
7. End with today or with the future — the most recent moment or a “what comes next” line.

How the timeline looks in the Retrospective
