Your anniversary is the date you've decided to celebrate for good, and that's exactly why it carries weight. On a monthiversary, a note does the job. On your anniversary, your partner hopes to see that you remember the whole year: the trip that went wrong and became a running joke, the rough week when you showed up with soup, the song you played until you were sick of it.
Below: ideas for each stage of your relationship, a plan for putting together your year in review, what to write, how to deliver it and how much to spend.
Which date counts as your anniversary?
It sounds obvious, but many couples have three candidate dates: the first date, the first kiss and the day you made it official (or that “so… are we dating?” moment). There's no rule. Most couples celebrate the day they started seeing themselves as a couple and keep the other dates as milestones in their story — they make great moments on a timeline.
If you've never settled on a date, ask lightly: “when do you think we started?” The conversation usually brings back a good memory — and a ready-made line for your letter.
Gift ideas for every year together
Each stage calls for a different tone. The table sums it up; detailed ideas follow. There's no official list of dating anniversary themes: the ones below are borrowed from the traditional wedding anniversary list and vary from source to source — use them as inspiration, not as rules.
| Time together | Mood | Traditional theme | Ideas that fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | First big milestone | Paper | A letter, a year-in-review retrospective, an album of your story, love notes |
| 2 years | Routine and closeness | Cotton | Cozy things for two, an album of both years, plans for year three |
| 3 years | Stability | Leather | A leather wallet or journal, a cooking class, a short trip |
| 4 years | Shared plans | Fruit and flowers, or linen (varies) | A balcony herb garden, the Saturday farmers' market together, “Open When…” letters |
| 5 years | Half a decade | Wood | A memory box, a piece of furniture you build together, a five-year retrospective |
| 10 years | A decade | Tin or aluminum (varies) | The trip you keep postponing, a ten-year album, new promises to each other |
The full traditional list keeps going well past 10 years, all the way to 50 and beyond — plenty of inspiration for the anniversaries still ahead of you.
1 year: tell the whole story
This is the anniversary where content matters most. You've been through everything for the first time: your first Christmas, each other's first birthday together, your first trip, your first fight that you worked through.
- First-year retrospective — one moment per month, with a photo, your song and the days together counted up to today.
- Four-seasons letter — one memory from each summer, fall, winter and spring you've already spent together.
- Recreate your first date — same place, the same outfit if you can, and a photo taken from the same angle as the first one.

2 years: a gift from someone who knows the routine
- Cozy for two — matching pajamas, a blanket for the couch, a whole Sunday with no plans. The cotton anniversary approves.
- An album of both years — year one on one side, year two on the other, and “Open When…” letters for year three.
- A list of places for the years ahead — with the first one already booked.
The full guide is at 2-year anniversary gifts.
3 and 4 years: surprise them with the format
The risk here is repetition. You've already swapped perfume, had dinner at your favorite restaurant and taken the classic trip. The content may be familiar; the format has to be new.
- A tour of your story — a route around town through your places (where you met, your Sunday bakery, the first apartment one of you had), with a photo at each stop.
- An experience neither of you has tried — scuba diving, a hot-air balloon ride, an overnight hike, a concert in another city.
- A map of your places and next destinations — where you've already been and where you still want to go, on a single map.
- A cooking class — bread, fresh pasta, dumplings: you leave with the recipe and with dinner.
5 years or more: keep the story
- Half-decade retrospective — one standout photo per year, the song from each phase and a letter about how you've both changed.
- Wooden memory box — ticket stubs, notes, the wristband from your first festival, organized by year. Wood is the traditional 5th-anniversary theme.
- New promises — no ceremony: a dinner where each of you reads out what you promise for the next five years.
- The trip you keep putting off — even if it's just the beach weekend that's been on the list since year two.
A year in review: the gift that sums you up
If one gift fits any anniversary, it's a retrospective — because it's literally your year, played back. You can make it by hand (a notebook with one month per page) or as a video, but the simplest way to bring photos, music, dates and a letter together in one place is a digital gift. A plan that works:
- List the months and note one event for each. It can be big (the trip) or small (the night the power went out and you played cards by candlelight).
- Pick the photos. According to LovePanda internal data (Sept 2026), the median is 7 photos per gift; for an anniversary, 10 to 15 photos tell a year well.
- Choose the song. The first one you danced to, or the one that played most in the car this year.
- Write the letter last, when the memories are fresh.
- Choose the format: animated stories in the Retrospective, or a book to flip through in the Album.
In the Couple Album, the Timeline section lays out those moments with a date and a photo, in the same book that holds your letter in an envelope and a live counter of your time together. Flip through a section:

Love dictionary and our journey
The dictionary entry for “love”, with a collage of your photos and a last definition written with your names and date; beside it, a string of fairy lights holding the moments that shaped your story.
In the Couple Retrospective, the same story turns into stories: your minutes together counting live, your love in numbers, your milestones as a couple in a passport full of stamps (1 year, 500 days, 2 years, 1,000 days…) and your next milestone on an airport departures board with the days left. What to do on your anniversary at home or on a budget
The plan counts as much as the gift — and it doesn't need a reservation or a big bill. Five ideas that fit a night at home or a tight budget:
- Old photos night — scroll through your first-year photos on the phone, and each of you tells the story behind one.
- Your story on a menu — the dish from your first date, the dessert from your first trip, the drink from the day you made it official.
- Letters for next year's anniversary — each of you writes a letter, seals it and keeps it to open a year from now.
- A picnic where you first kissed — or at the closest spot your city allows.
- Playlist of the year — one song per month, in the order things happened.
What to write for your anniversary
The structure that works: how it all started → what you discovered about them this year → what you want for the next one. Three templates to adapt:
“A year ago I didn't know you drink your coffee black or that you sing loudly in the shower thinking no one can hear. Now I know both, and I love them. Happy first anniversary — year two is off to a great start.”
“Three years, two moves and a plant that only survived because you remember to water it. Thank you for taking care of everything that's ours, including me.”
“Five years, and I still look for you in the crowd when you go get the popcorn. Let's keep choosing each other on the ordinary days — they're most of them, and they're my favorite.”

How to deliver your anniversary gift
- At midnight, by text, in the first minute of the day.
- At breakfast, with the QR Code printed under their mug. More ideas in gifts with a QR Code.
- At the last stop of your story tour, asking them to open the link right there.
- On a video call, if you're apart: each of you opens it on your own phone, at the same time.
4 mistakes that ruin an anniversary
- Realizing it's your anniversary on the day itself. Set a yearly reminder on your phone a week before — and another one the day before.
- Giving a gift that's really for you. The video game you're “going to play together” rarely counts as a gift for the other person.
- Going wildly out of proportion. An international trip in year one can embarrass someone who planned a dinner. If you want to go big, align expectations first.
- Posting before showing. If the gift has photos and a letter, let your partner see it first, in private. The photo for social media can come later — if they want.
How much it costs and which plan to choose
The Retrospective starts at $4.90 and the Album at $9.90, with a one-time payment. For an anniversary, think about keeping it: with the Retrospective, Forever keeps the gift online with no time limit (Just Today (24h) stays up for 24 hours, and you can upgrade it to lifetime access later, from your dashboard). With the Album, the book stays online forever on both plans, and Edit Forever lets you add pages at every new anniversary.
| Plan | Price | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| For 24 hours | $4.90 | A surprise to enjoy today. Access for 24 hours. |
| Forever | $9.90 | Keep your story close, with lifetime access. |
